Design a One-Page Website in Squarespace (Step-by-Step for Beginners)

If you’re just starting your business and want to launch a simple, strategic website without the overwhelm of multiple pages, a one-page website is your best friend. In this guide, I’ll walk you through every step of building a one-page website in Squarespace — from choosing a layout to customizing the design and writing your copy (even if you're not a designer or copywriter!).

Let’s get your business online fast — and make it look good while we’re at it.

What Is a One-Page Website?

A one-page website is a single, scrollable page that contains all your essential information: who you are, what you do, what services you offer, and how people can contact you. Instead of clicking around, visitors scroll to navigate.

It’s perfect for:

  • Freelancers, coaches, or creatives just starting out

  • Launching fast without investing in a full website yet

  • Service providers who only need basic info on display

  • Promoting one offer, product, or service

Why Use Squarespace for Your One-Page Website?

Squarespace is beginner-friendly, beautifully designed, and doesn’t require coding. It’s a go-to platform for service-based businesses and solopreneurs who want a professional-looking site without hiring a developer.

Plan Your One-Page Layout

Before jumping into the build, map out the sections you need. A great one-page website layout might include:

Suggested One-Page Layout Structure

  • Header: Who you are, what you do, who you help

  • Services: Short descriptions of your offers

  • About: A short paragraph to build connection and trust

  • Testimonials: Social proof to build credibility

  • Call to Action: What’s the next step? (Book a call, download a freebie, etc.)

  • Optional Freebie Section: Lead magnet to grow your email list

You can follow this exact format or adjust based on your business.

Create a New Page in Squarespace

How to Create a Page

  1. From your Squarespace dashboard, go to Pages

  2. Click the + icon to add a Blank Page

  3. Name it something like "Home"

You’ll be editing and previewing this page as you go.

Add Sections to Your Page

Squarespace lets you build pages using sections. You can add pre-built layouts or custom blocks.

Adding a New Section

  • Click Edit on your new page

  • Scroll to the area where you want to add content

  • Click + Add Section

  • Choose a layout or start from scratch

Use saved sections if you’re working from a template like this one — just click the heart icon to save it and reuse it later.

Customize Text, Images, and Layout

Each section can be edited easily:

  • Click text to edit or highlight and change fonts/colors

  • Click images to upload new ones

  • Use drag-and-drop to rearrange elements

  • Duplicate or delete blocks as needed

Want a gallery, contact form, accordion, or video? Just click Add Block and choose your element.

Adjust Spacing and Layout

Each section is made of rows and columns, and you can:

  • Drag to adjust width or height

  • Remove excess padding

  • Choose whether to “Fill Screen” or not

Use the alignment tools to fine-tune your design. A neat, well-spaced layout increases readability and professionalism.

Update Your Site Styles

Fonts and Colors

Navigate to Site Styles > Fonts or Colors:

  • Choose from a variety of typefaces

  • Customize a color palette or use Squarespace defaults

  • Match your brand — or keep it simple and minimal

Need help deciding? This brand-friendly Squarespace Template already has a curated color palette and font pairing you can start with.

Optimize for Mobile

Don't skip this! Most visitors are on mobile.

  • Switch to Mobile View (top right corner)

  • Adjust text, image sizes, and spacing

  • Realign elements to look clean on smaller screens

Check every section — especially if you’ve used multiple columns or full-width images.

Create a Navigation Menu with Anchor Links

Even though you only have one page, you can still have a menu that scrolls to different parts of it.

How Anchor Links Work

  1. Add an Anchor block to each section

  2. Name it something like “about”, “services”, etc.

  3. In your main navigation, link like this: /home#about

Repeat for each section. Test each link to make sure it scrolls smoothly!

Add Your Logo, Favicon, and Title

Make it yours:

  • Add your site title or upload a logo

  • Upload a favicon under Settings > Browser Icon

  • Add your Social Sharing Image to control what appears when links are shared

Set Up SEO Title and Description

Basic SEO Settings:

Go to Marketing > SEO > SEO Title & Description

This is what will show up on Google. Write a clear, engaging description of your business. For example:

“Holistic wellness coach helping busy professionals restore balance through custom plans and 1:1 support.”

Make it keyword-rich but readable.

Write Your Copy in Under an Hour

AI Copy Trick

Here’s how to write your website copy quickly:

  1. Open a blank notepad and write down:

    • What you do

    • Who you help

    • Your offers

    • What makes you different

  2. Paste this info into ChatGPT using a prompt like:

“Write website copy for a [insert type of business] targeting [insert audience]. Include headline, intro, services, about, and call-to-action.”

  1. Review and tweak the response to match your voice

  2. Paste it into your template

Done.

Use Screenshots to Plan Your Layout

If you're more visual:

  • Use a free screenshot extension

  • Take a screenshot of your blank layout

  • Paste it into ChatGPT with your copy to see a preview

Great for mapping things out before publishing.

Final Checks Before Publishing

Before you hit “Publish,” run through this checklist:

  • ✅ All sections added

  • ✅ Navigation works with anchor links

  • ✅ Mobile view looks great

  • ✅ Logo and favicon added

  • ✅ Social sharing image uploaded

  • ✅ SEO title and description filled out

  • ✅ Clear call to action in final section

Bonus Tip — Use a Pre-Built Squarespace Template

If this all still feels overwhelming, use a pre-built Squarespace template that already has a one-page layout designed for your niche.
